CN December 14, 1960-May 1973

Debuted via employee magazine Keeping Track, January 1961. April 1961 1^st unit painted. First cars in the new logo were 11/60-02/61 CC&F boxcars in the 290201-290500 series. Freight cars were lettered ‘Canadian National’ on one side and ‘Canadien National’ on the other. The CN logo has been nicknamed the ‘lazy three’, ‘bent paperclip’, ‘wet noodle’, and the ‘wiggly worm’.

The first units released on February 10, 1961 were 6536 and 6636 and passenger cars with a blue, later changed to black, stripe 9059, 5515, and 5345.

On February 16, 1961 the first freight unit was released that unit being 4566.

Freight locomotives were black with red-orange ends with 12’11” CN ‘noodle’ logo on long hood in light grey.

Passenger locomotives were painted black with 30 degree grey stripes on carbody always sloping to rear, and red-orange nose with the red-orange sloping backwards.

Boxcars, open hoppers, gondolas flat cars, stock cars received mineral brown paint with light grey ‘noodle’ on right hand side of body.

Covered hoppers received grey body with red ‘noodle’ on right hand side. Later some covered hoppers would receive black lettering.

Refrigerator cars were aluminum with black ‘noodle’ and lettering.

Cabooses received red-orange paint with light grey ‘noodle’ and lettering.

Passenger cars received light grey with black window band and roof and red ‘noodle’ appearing on the lower right on the light grey field.

Trailer/Containers were silver with red ‘noodle, and ‘Piggyback’, ‘Messangeries’, or ‘Express’ appearing in light grey on black field below the ‘noodle’ and all other lettering in black.

May 1966 saw colour added to the doors of boxcars indicating service:

Yellow=Newsprint

Green=Forest Products

Red=(Refrigerator cars) Meat rails, (Boxcars) Messangeries/Express service.

Blue=Refrigerator car.

When CN acquired Canada Gulf Railway it created a CG ‘noodle’on CG Caboose 79507
